Ladies’ Lunch with David Waters

July 4, 12:30 pm - 3:00 pm

Enjoy a delicious two course lunch in the company of David Waters, founder of the Great Bustard Group, a conservation charity on Salisbury Plain.

David’s history with Great Bustards goes back to his teenage years, when he became involved with a captive breeding project set up by the Hon Alymer Tryon in South Wiltshire. Although this project was unsuccessful, it infected David with the “Bustard Bug” and lead him to form the Great Bustard Group in 1997.

After leaving work, David set up a rescue programme for nests destroyed by agriculture in southern Russia and worked in Russia for 4 months a year, for 10 years, bringing back some of the Great Bustards they hatched from the rescued eggs. The first of these were released in Wiltshire in 2004.

In 2013 David convinced the UK government that eggs from Spain were a better genetic match for the original UK Great Bustard population and the Spanish government have allowed him to collect eggs there for the last 5 years. The UK Great Bustard population is now over 70 birds and is self-sustaining with good numbers of breeding birds.

David will talk about the extinction of the bird in the UK and about the restoration of the species.

Lunch is £26 per person (£5 from each person goes towards the local Wiltshire Bobby Van Trust).
