Enjoy a beautiful day visiting Bowood House, surrounded by acres of ‘Capability’ Brown landscape and stunning gardens. Bowood House, home to the Lansdowne family since 1754, has a fascinating history. The Big House, as it was known, was demolished in 1955, leaving the most perfectly balanced Georgian structure, full of fascinating family memorabilia, including the room in which Dr. Joseph Priestley identified oxygen gas on 1st August 1774. Making 2024, 250 years ago this season.

The group thoroughly enjoyed their visit to Bowood, along with the delicious lunch, so perhaps you could pass on their appreciation to all involved. I’d also like to extend my thanks to you for being so helpful in organising it.
Debbie Burton, Administrator for Kent Men of the Trees
I reflect back on the visit with great warmth and pleasure; we were very well looked after and enjoyed both gardens and house in the company of very friendly and informative guides.
George, Chairman, KMOTT (Kent Men of the Trees)
Thank you so much for all your help and efficiency in making Cowbridge U3A's day out to Bowood so enjoyable. I heard much praise from our members. What impressed me the most was the extent and beauty of the grounds, and the size of the scones! I won't forget either of those in a hurry!
Cowbridge U3A's History Group, Oct 2023
We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Bowood House. In spite of the rain, several hardy souls managed to see a lot of the gardens and we all thought the house and contents were amazing. Thanks to all who made the visit so pleasant. The room attendants were very friendly and full of information, which greatly added to our appreciation of the day.
J. Gould, June 2019
Please accept my sincere thanks, again, for our most interesting visit to Bowood House yesterday. All of our members commented upon how much they had enjoyed the day: the House, the excellent lunch and, in particular, the revelation which was the tour of the Walled Garden.
C. Davies,
Thank you so much for the superb organisation of our visit yesterday, meeting us on arrival and escorting us to the restaurant. The staff were well prepared for our group, tables already set with water jugs on the table and delicious food ready to serve. They were welcoming and helpful, making a really good start to our afternoon at Bowood. Everyone enjoyed the exhibitions in the house and the more energetic enjoyed walking in the lovely grounds. Altogether a most enjoyable visit! Many thanks once again.
Camberley U3A travel group,
Firstly, this is to say how much everyone enjoyed our visit to Bowood on Tuesday, and to thank you and the staff for your warm welcome. We certainly were so lucky that the rain cleared for our visit, and only started again just after we left! So, we were able to enjoy the gardens and grounds in sunshine, as well as the interesting exhibitions in the house. Members appreciated the delicious home-made biscuits on arrival, and also the excellent Stables Restaurant lunches - please give our thanks also to the restaurant and catering staff. Thanks again,
Meg, SDNTA,
Just wanted to say a very big thank you for your wonderful organisation for our trip and please pass our thanks to Mandy, she is a superb guide, very knowledgeable, patient and understanding. It has given us an appetite to return for some of the other tours in the future, once again many thanks.
